WeAreDevelopers 2018: what we brought home from Vienna

By NEPTED ·

This year we were part of the WeAreDevelopers World Congress in Vienna, Austria — an annual event that brings thousands of developers together for the latest insights in tech.

Since 2015, once a year, on a (hopefully) sunny day, the global developer community meets at WeAreDevelopers — an event many call the “Woodstock of Developers”. The 2018 edition brought together 8,000 techies from 70 countries for 72 hours of pure dev fun, with more than 150 of the brightest minds in tech and the largest playground for developers in Europe. And we saw it all first-hand.

Legends on stage

One of the best things about the congress is the line-up of speakers. We heard from Steve Wozniak of Apple and John Romero, co-creator of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. Joel Spolsky, co-founder of Stack Overflow and Trello, and Andreas M. Antonopoulos — best-selling author, educator and one of the world’s foremost bitcoin and open blockchain experts — joined as keynote speakers.

What everyone was talking about

Plenty of new software and technologies were presented. Progressive web apps (PWAs) were a hot topic, as was blockchain’s role in the future of development, alongside more futuristic subjects like robotics. We even watched someone fly a drone with nothing but NativeScript and Angular. It’s amazing how far technology has come — and how many ways there are to put it to work in your business. More than ever, technology is the tool of the future.

Work hard, play hard

We also caught up with some of our partners, enjoyed the chill-out zone and — a personal favourite — the retro corner, packed with nostalgic devices from the last century. It’s not all learning and working; sometimes you have to have fun too.

We can’t wait to see what next year brings, considering this one was already so amazing.
